LORD & LADY, "The Lift"
If you were as obsessed as I was with the figure skating during the recent Winter Olympics, perhaps without even realizing it, you were treated this past February to the soul-stirring magic of the incredible harmonious hipsters Lord & Lady. The alt-pop duo’s transcendent “La La Land” Medley served as the soundtrack to a performance during the pairs free skate by Russian figure skaters Kristina Astakhova and Ryan Gosling lookalike Alexey Rogonov.
The medley has been nothing short of a phenomenon since Lord & Lady – Southern California based singer/songwriters Scott Oatley and Rachel Panchal – first posted their video on YouTube in December 2016, earning over 4.9 million views. Their YouTube channel, which features 25 videos – including a batch of originals, a Chainsmokers/Coldplay mashup, a John Mayer tune and their popular clip for the equally compelling “The Greatest Showman Medley” - has over 10,000 subscribers, and the audio of “The Greatest Showman” has over 114,000 streams on Spotify.
All of this buzz surrounding Lord & Lady’s re-imaginings of well-known pop and show tunes has laid a dynamic foundation for the release of their infectious, crazy-cool new single “The Lift” – a dreamy, soulful reflection on feeling “the lift of butterflies” when the prospect of new love appears. An unabashedly romantic gem about feeling like one’s new lover has special powers that can truly elevate the soul, it begins with their individual voices singing over a hypnotic, organic groove generated by bass and fingersnaps.
That lays the foundation for a beautifully seamless vocal duet that truly captures that moment when the dreams of each individual bond together to create those sparks we all long for in our lives. True to its title, the song continues to build emotional intensity in the chorus before some trippy sound effects take it in even more otherworldly directions before the second verse.
“The Lift” is the lead single for Lord & Lady’s upcoming four track EP No Ghost.
