ANN LICATER, "Sky Dreaming"

Whether Ann Licater is celebrating the natural wonders and healing splendors of sacred planet earth or finding subtle soothing joy and divine inspiration looking up and pondering the heavens, the award-winning composer, multi-flute virtuoso and visionary new age artist effortlessly creates a bridge from the empowering life she breathes into instruments to our hearts and souls – and always at the perfect moment when we need it.

Writing about “Divine Skies,” the single from her 2023 album Between the Stars, I observed, “She casts her musical heart and soul above earth to the expansive worlds above via the transcendent melodic beauty of her Native American flute and an ancient vessel flute known as the ocarina.” Finding a way as always to bring a great sense of adventure and endless curiosity to the spirit of musical meditation, Ann continues this heavenward theme on “Sky Dreaming,” the gently meditative yet subtly soul awakening lead single from her upcoming collection Echoes from the Forest – which, notably was recorded in her native Midwest, at Skyline Studios in Eau Claire, WI.

 As with her other recent works, there’s wonder and grace in the way she uses an instrument that’s so earthbound and organic (usually made of various woods, bone, reed, clay and metal) to explore and contemplate the grand mysteries and healing energies of the billions of worlds above our own.

While she leads this tenderly guided meditation with the improvised hypnotic elegance of her Native American style flute, the immersion into its titular dream-like realm includes weaving subtle, intricate supporting layers into the flow, including the flutist’s own vocal layers (which adds a touch of humanity to what is otherwise an experience of pure divinity), soft and beautiful synth harmonies and the soft spoken bass touches of Peter Phippen.

It’s another surreal sonic experience from Ann that lays a wondrous foundation for the soon to be released full album.
