Building on the (quite literally) spirit-filled vibe of her independently recorded 2020 Spooky Jazz EP and its popular full-length 2024 follow-up Spooky Jazz Vol. 2, old school jazz chanteuse Hannah Gill continues her run of success on Turtle Bay Records with Spooky Jazz Vol. 3, a splendidly ghoulish, haunting yet vibrant, artful yet slightly campy and rhythmically multi-faceted invitation to the jazziest Halloween party of 2025.

Vigorously ensembling with her vigorous longtime sextet and newcomer trumpeter and arranger Danny Jonokuchi, the singer, shares fresh spins on mostly long overlooked Songbook era gems she curated from a deep dive into thematically appropriate material. With the exception of her brisk romp through “Old Devil Moon” (inspired by the Anita O’Day/Oscar Peterson version), it’s likely listeners will have to start the enjoyable process of Googling to source these stellar tunes by artists like The Dooley Sisters (“Spider in the Web”), Artie Shaw (“Moon Ray”), Tommy Dorsey/Louis Armstrong (the peppy “As Long as You Live (You’ll Be Dead if You Die)” and Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey (“My Friend The Ghost”).
Hannah gets the party rolling with an ominous word for word introduction lifted from Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Music to be Murdered By. Stay safe on October 31 – and enjoy this clever collection!
