On Through the Cracks the Light Is Born, vocalist and composer Marie-Paule Franke offers a deeply expressive and thoughtfully crafted collection that bridges jazz, folk and poetic singer-songwriter traditions. Backed by a finely attuned New York-based quartet featuring saxophonist Amir Mankovski, pianist Dongfeng Liu, double bassist Marcos Varela and drummer Matthias Künzli, Franke presents seven heartfelt original songs that unfold with emotional nuance, lyrical depth, gentle intricacies and an empowering sense of artistic intention.

Franke’s voice is the album’s emotional anchor—clear, evocative and capable of shifting effortlessly between intimacy and quiet dreamy intensity. The opener “Twilight Whispers,” a tribute to Joni Mitchell, establishes a reflective and atmospheric tone, blending gentle piano textures with subtle harmonic movement. From there, “’Tis Yours” draws the listener further inward with its haunting melodic sensibility and delicate interplay between piano and saxophone, creating a mood that feels both suspended and deeply grounded.

Lyrically, Franke explores themes of love, loss, personal transformation and optimistic perseverance. The sweetly swaying “Beneath Broken Dreams” and the exotic, bass and soundscape driven “Freedom” stand out for their insightful clarity and melodic strength, while the tender ballad “Dagger Heart” introduces a more narrative-driven approach, unfolding like a hushed  confession. The striking “Sword of Damocles” adds a layer of dramatic tension, its evolving structure and tonal shifts giving the album a broader emotional range.
