Few contemporary large ensemble recordings achieve the kind of seamless dialogue between composer, soloist and orchestra that unfolds throughout Coalescencia. Featuring original music by acclaimed Mexican pianist and composer Alex Mercado and brought vividly to life by conductor, arranger and producer Rosino Serrano and his outstanding Orquesta Moderna, this ambitious digital-only release is an exhilarating meeting point of contemporary jazz, classical architecture and adventurous Latin orchestral expression.

Rather than presenting Mercardo as a featured soloist against a conventional big band backdrop, Coalescencia creates an ongoing musical conversation in which Mercado’s fluid, classically informed pianism and Serrano’s richly detailed ensemble writing continually inspire one another. Throughout the seven-piece program, lyrical introspection gives way to explosive brass passages, intricate woodwind textures, dynamic percussion and exhilarating improvisation, creating music that is constantly evolving while remaining remarkably cohesive.
The title track immediately establishes this compelling aesthetic. Beginning with Mercado’s elegant solo piano before expanding into buoyant ensemble passages, “Coalescencia” gracefully balances lyrical beauty with rhythmic intensity as horns, percussion and piano engage in an ever-changing dialogue. The equally captivating “Relojes” follows with moody piano reflections before blossoming into an energetic showcase of vibrant brass writing, sparkling improvisation and hypnotic rhythmic interplay.
The album’s centerpiece is the four-part Concierto para Piano y Big Band: Escenas de una Ciudad, an expansive work inspired by the poetry of T.S. Eliot. Rather than functioning as four isolated movements, the suite unfolds like a cinematic portrait of urban life. “Noches Humeantes del Invierno” moves effortlessly between dramatic orchestral statements and Mercado’s hypnotic piano passages, while the brief “Ciudad en Despertar” paints an evocative sunrise through delicate woodwinds, lonely trumpet lines and gradually awakening ensemble colors. “Imágenes Sórdidas” provides some of the album’s most dazzling interplay, juxtaposing whimsical flute passages, explosive horn writing and Mercado’s breathtaking improvisations. The concluding “La Infinita Sufriente” masterfully balances intimacy and grandeur, its shifting orchestral dynamics framing another spectacular display of Mercado’s virtuosic performance.
The closing “Cora-Son” offers a joyful finale, driven by playful percussion, punchy Latin grooves, spirited trumpet features and Mercado’s dazzling keyboard flights. Its infectious energy provides an uplifting conclusion to an album that consistently rewards attentive listening.
Throughout Coalescencia, Rosino Serrano proves himself an exceptional orchestrator, shaping Mercado’s sophisticated compositions into richly layered musical narratives filled with color, movement and dramatic sweep.
The result is a thoroughly engaging collaboration that bridges jazz improvisation, classical sophistication and contemporary Latin orchestral traditions with remarkable imagination. More than simply a showcase for extraordinary musicianship, Coalescencia is an inspired artistic statement that demonstrates how beautifully diverse musical languages can converge into one compelling creative voice.
