Infused with a swirl of jazz whimsy blended with ambient spaciousness and heartfelt intent, veteran singer-songwriter Paul Kahn transforms a lifetime of lived experience into a warm, roots-infused collection that blends elements of jazz, Americana, blues and folk into a multi-hued, deeply personal statement. Produced by Catherine Russell, whose musical sensibility and collaborative presence are felt throughout, the album – a follow up to the 2024 re-release of his sole 1999 collection These Ears and Eyes - emphasizes storytelling, emotional honesty and understated musicality.

Kahn’s collaborative history with Russell – visually illustrated in the charming album artwork, plays a huge creative part in the development of this fresh vehicle for their vast musical sensibilities. Over the past quarter century, the singer has produced or co-produced nine of her recordings, receiving three Grammy nominations along the way. In addition to producing the EP, Russell contributes backing vocals, mandolin and keyboard on the opening number, the lively, reggae-tinged “Stain on My Sleeve,” which artfully sets the tone of the collection with its themes of perseverance and self-awareness.
Kahn’s voice—weathered, expressive and unpretentious—serves as the perfect vehicle for these thoughtful poetic tunes. He delivers each lyric with a conversational ease that draws the listener in, making even the most reflective moments feel immediately relatable. While “Memory Lane” evokes a gentle, wistful nostalgia supported by Russell’s tasteful backing vocals, the title track, dedicated to Kahn’s grandfather, stands as the album’s philosophical centerpiece, exploring ideas of humility, compromise and personal growth with clarity and grace. Elsewhere, “Pull Another Leaf from the Clover” balances introspection with wry humor, using vivid imagery to explore aging and self-reckoning.
Musically, the album benefits from an exceptional ensemble, including guitarist Matt Munisteri, bassist Russell Hall and famed SNL drummer Shawn Pelton. Their playing is consistently sensitive and intuitive, creating a relaxed yet engaging backdrop enriched by subtle textures—accordion, flute and organ—that add depth without distraction.
Ultimately, Willingness is less about stylistic innovation than it is about connection—between past and present, artist and listener. It’s a gracefully crafted, soul-centered work that resonates through its sincerity and quiet wisdom.
